Arusha Bakwata cleric hurt in ‘bomb attack’

The Arusha regional secretary of the Tanzania Muslim Council (Bakwata), Sheikh Abdulkareem Jonjo, has been admitted at Mount Meru Regional Hospital after being injured in a suspected bomb attack.
Speaking at his hospital bed, where he is nursing wounds, Jonjo claimed that the incident occurred on Wednesday night when he was asleep at his home located at Sokoni One area.
Recounting the ordeal, the cleric said on the fateful day, he returned home at 7pm and there was no power in the area.
When the incident occurred, he explained, his family was not in the house as his wife and children “are in Tabora where they are attending a funeral.”
At around 10pm he woke up and realised that the power was on and started to charge his mobile phone, he said.
“After that I went back to bed and at 0.30am I saw something on fire in the room. I woke up to try to tough it but it unfortunately exploded, injuring me and set me unconscious,” he said.
He added that the injuries on the face and hands made him to ooze a lot of blood.
After an hour he managed to seek help from a neighbor who took him to a nearby police station and hospital.
Regional Commissioner Magesa Mulongo, who visited the victim in his hospital bed later, visited the victim’s home.
“The police are closely investigating the incident to establish the reason of the explosion,” RC Mulongo said, adding: “This is a very rare incident in the region and the city of Arusha. We are going to establish the truth of the matter to see whether what exploded was a bomb or not.”
According to Mulongo, the Regional Security Committee has set up a special team comprising Tanzania People’s Defence Force and Police Force officials to investigate the incident.
The RC however declined to link the incident with religious beliefs.

THE Government has called upon professionals supporting farmer entrepreneurship in the country to work in coordination to support  the development for the small holder farmers through Agri-hub Tanzania which was officially launched at the weekend in Arusha.
In his opening speech during the business cocktail to mark the launch of the network, the assistant Arusha Regional administrative Secretary Exaud  Mwanga hailed the initiative  in Tanzania ,saying it will help the country to implement its Kilimo Kwanza programme practically.

THE coming of the network to  Tanzania was enabled by  Agri proFocus wich  joined hands in partnership with a number of development actors to launch agri hub Tanzania organization.

He said that there is much need to give small holder producers the opportunity to access markets through different enterprising schemes.

“I want to enlighten you that a small holder entrepreneur without a market focus is simply not an entrepreneur therefore it is important to develop mechanisms to make this a reality “Said Mwanga.

 He urged civil societies, private sector and government agencies representatives’  to pay attention in organising the small holder farmers for business by providing them access to affordable and flexible finance and access to markets.
He said agriculture in Tanzania remains the largest contributor to the national economy, producing commodities /livestock for export as well as food for domestic consumption and raw materials for the domestic industries, therefore the  initiative will bring tremendous results if its mission and vision will be put into action.
 In his presentation, Mr. Apollo Muyanja the coordinator of  agri hub Tanzania emphasised the need for different actors in the agriculture sector in Tanzania to promote a joint agenda on farmer entrepreneurship through his organisation.
Muyanja said the programme thematic areas will focus on organized farmer groups, access to, markets, finance, gender in value chains and sustainable food production.
“Agri-ProFocus (APF) is a partnership with Dutch roots that promotes farmer entrepreneurship in developing countries.The partnership was founded in 2005 with the aim of rallying together professionals, expertise and resources around a joint interest in farmer entrepreneurship”said Muyanja.
He said, ProFocus network members are organizations and companies that gather, train, connect and provide inputs and credit to farmer entrepreneurs and producer organisations.by  promoting entrepreneurship and connecting producers with national and international markets.
"Its  members aim to both open up market potential for business in developing countries, as well as meet with the challenge of sustainably feeding 9 billion people by 2050"Muyanja said .
 Agri- ProFocus sets up agri hubs in different countries and these agri hubs are steered by a coordinator or coordination team supports the local network.
In Tanzania, Agri proFocus has joined hands in partnership with a number of development actors to launch agri hub Tanzania. Currently there are eleven agri hubs in Africa operating in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mali, Niger, Benin, Mozambique, Zambia and with the newest in Tanzania currently in the start-up phase. Agri hub Tanzania is the newest entrant to join this global agri ProFocus network promoting farmer entrepreneurship.

Over 300 women entrepreneurs at Loliondo division in Ngorongoro district now can smile all the way to the bank after securing a reliable market for their beads, thanks to a tour firm.

The Boston based Thomson Safaris Tour Company; the legal owner of the 
Enashiva Nature Refuge has set up a market where Maasai women can sell their beads to the tourists in its efforts to empower locals.


Nekaki Meikoki told visiting journalists that the firm’s initiative 
has become a blessing as majority of Maasai women from Sukenya, Soit sambu, Okiu and Mundoros villages now earn their living by selling beads.


She said women groups operating in the area can generate up to $2,500 
per day by selling their artwork, mainly beads, depending on the number of visitors to the wildlife rich Enashiva nature refuge located within the Serengeti ecosystem.


Ms Nekaki said art craft business have elevated Maasai women to become 
the breadwinners, overcoming the Maasai oppressed tradition which relegated women to domestic chores.


“This business earn us handsome money enabling some of our 
counterparts to build bricked houses, purchase livestock to mention,but a few” she explained.


“Doing business with tourists have brought joy to our families, our

husbands are supporting and appreciating our efforts because we are
relieving them” says Nemayan Kioki, a founder member of the group.
On her part Magdalena Parmere, a mother of three kids, two studying in
Sukenya Primary School and one at Loliondo Secondary School said she
managed to pay for their school fees without help from her husband.
Speaking with reporters about women development in business Sukenya
Village Chairman Loserian Orminis commended the support from Thomson
safaris tour Company, saying the initiative needs emulation by other
firms in order to empower locals to tape from tourism industry.
“We have lost thousands of our cattle’s during the draught times in
2006, our land, families were left in abject poverty, but now art
craft business has brought a new hope for our survival“ Orminis noted.
Thomson Safaris Tour Company, General Manager, John Bearcroft   said
his company is committed to partnering with communities around their
investment.
He said,  “Many Maasai women’s groups around the Enashiva nature
refuge are just one outstanding example of how a few entrepreneurs can
lead to a thriving business.”
“Balancing the aims of conservation, tourism, and communities remains
one of the greatest challenges throughout Tanzania,” Bearcroft
stressed.
 He assured Loliondo communities that they are working with
stakeholders at all levels on developing solutions to meet such
challenges.

A total of 200 Maasai children  from Ngabobo village in Arumeru district of Arusha Region  now have a reason to smile, thanks to  Africa amini  Alama organization for sponsoring them to join in  schools  instead of grazing cattle’s  for boys and girls to avoid early marriages. 

Africa Amini Alama , a non-profit  organization based in Arusha is also constructing a new Engilish medium Academy which  will be officially  launched  on 1St November 2012.
Africa Amini President, Dr.Christine Wallner from Austria said her organization’s core objective is to see children from Maasai communities and other vulnerable groups being educated and helped to achieve their potential in life.

"This is my dream and I am determined to fulfill it with the help of motivated individuals who want to make a difference in the livelihood for the disadvantaged people in this beautiful country “she said.

She said the new school will help to protect and educate Maasai children in Ngabobo Village and its neighborhoods who use to walk long distance to reach.
“Lack of school in this village has put children into high risks of being attacked by wild animals that are rampant in this area” said Dr.Christine.

She said five classrooms, staff room and teachers houses are at the stage of completion and the whole project is approximated to cost 500million Tanzanian shillings.

In his part Ngabobo Village Chairman Zabulon Kimaki thanked the organization for constructing the school for their children saying the help has relieved their long wait to have a school in their area.

“It is a miracle to see our children going to school, they have been full sponsored, may God bless these people for their loving hands” said Dr.Wallner.
He said the school will be administrated by the government in partnership with Amini Alama organization the government
