CIA Director David Petraeus, testifies before the US Senate Intelligence Committee during a full committee hearing on "World Wide Threats." in this 31 January 2012
David Petraeus retired from 37 years in the military to become CIA director

CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from his post, admitting he had an extra-marital affair.
In a statement, Mr Petraeus said he had submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama, and that he had shown "extremely poor judgement".
He described his behaviour as "unacceptable" for the leader of the nation's main intelligence agency.
Mr Petraeus became CIA boss in 2011 after heading international forces in Iraq, then in Afghanistan.
He was the highest-profile military officer of the post-9/11 years, winning plaudits for his role running the "surge" in Iraq and implementing a counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan.
'Great patriot'
Mr Petraeus' resignation came just three days after President Barack Obama's re-election, and prompted a flurry of statements from the White House, intelligence community and Mr Petraeus himself.
Announcing his decision to stand down, the former general was full of contrition.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extra-marital affair," Mr Petraeus said in a statement.
"Such behaviour is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organisation such as ours. This afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation."
Mr Obama's statement said Mr Petraeus had "provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades", citing both his time as CIA director and service to the military.
"By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger."
"Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work."
James Clapper, director of national intelligence, thanked Mr Petraeus for his decades of service: "Dave's decision to step down represents the loss of one of our nation's most respected public servants,"

David Petraeus: Career highlights

  • Graduated from West Point in 1974
  • Commander of Multinational Force Iraq, Feb 2007 to Sept 2008
  • Commander of International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in Afghanistan, July 2010 to July 2011
  • Became CIA director in Sept 2011 after being confirmed by the senate 94-0
"I have spent more than five decades serving our country - in uniform and out - and of all the exceptional men and women I have worked with over the years, I can honestly say that Dave Petraeus stands out as one of our nation's great patriots."
CIA deputy director Michael Morell will serve as acting director of the agency, the White House confirmed. Eventually Mr Obama must nominate a new director to head the agency, who will then need to be confirmed by the Senate.
Mr Morell, who is well respected at both the White House and on Capitol Hill, also served as acting director following the departure of former CIA chief Leon Panetta.
The CIA faces a potential period of instability after Mr Petraeus' resignation, as it also deals with a budget plateau and questions over its response to a deadly attack at a US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The crowd was smaller than it was four years ago, and the venue was indoors, but President Barack Obama's victory party early on Wednesday shared a theme with his 2008 election night: hope.

Despite a rough economy that dulled the glow of being America's first black president, Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in a hard-fought race for the White House and celebrated with confetti, hugs and a promise to represent everyone in the nation.

"Tonight, despite all the hardship we've been through, despite all the frustrations of Washington, I've never been more hopeful about our future," Obama said.

"I have never been more hopeful about America. And I ask you to sustain that hope," he told the cheering crowd in Chicago, his hometown.

Obama won the presidency in 2008 on the themes of "hope" and "change." But except for the final weeks of the campaign, he shunned those key words during his 2012 re-election effort in the face of Republican attacks on his economic stewardship and other issues.

With his robust victory, those attacks - at least from Romney - are now over. The president struck a conciliatory chord toward his opponent in his remarks.

"We may have battled fiercely, but it's only because we love this country deeply and we care so strongly about its future," he said. "In the weeks ahead, I also look forward to sitting down with Governor Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward."

In 2008, Obama spoke to a crowd of some 240,000 people at Chicago's Grant Park, marking his historic victory over Republican John McCain. This year, he chose a convention center, McCormick Place, with seating room for 18,000.

The venue's capacity was not the only change from four years ago. Obama's daughters are taller, his hair is grayer, and the historic aspect of his election was less pronounced than it was in 2008. The crowd, however, was every bit as enthusiastic as four years ago.

"This solidifies something that started in 2008," said Karen Lehman, 59. "I feel so fantastic I can hardly describe it. This is a victory for all of these people here that President Obama was able to mobilize. They believed that he was moving in the right direction. I am thrilled."

People hugged each other, waved tiny American flags, danced, and pumped their firsts in the air. Prior to his victory, whenever a state was projected into Obama's column, supporters erupted in cheers.

Before his remarks, Obama was joined on stage by his wife, Michelle, and their two girls, Malia and Sasha. After they departed, he paused to listen to Stevie Wonder's song "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" before starting to speak.

When he did, he praised his vice president, his campaign staff, and his family.

"For now, one dog's probably enough," he said to his girls, to whom he famously promised to get a dog if he won in 2008.

People in the crowd wiped tears from their eyes as Obama spoke. When he was finished, the Obama and Biden families came onto the stage and confetti fell down on the crowd. The families waved and eventually walked off the stage.

As his wife and daughters walked behind a blue curtain, Obama came back to the front of the stage, looked around, waved to the crowd again and mouthed, "Thank you."

Recent reports say local farmers in Arusha, Manyara and surrounding regions  are  using uranium dust  to preserve their farm crops against pests and diseases, posing dangers to themselves and the entire public.

Consumers who eat the maize, beans and other farm produce preserved  this way are under serious threats of cancer and other diseases.

Njiro-based Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAECA) has confirmed this deadly development and taken the opportunity to warn the public, especially gullible farmers, against the misuse of the dangerous chemicals.

Speaking in Arusha this week, the Director General of TAEC Prof Idd Mkilaha said of late there have been dealers who are importing uranium dust  from neighboring countries, selling the chemicals to farmers and fooling them that uranium dust was the best solution against seed diseases as well as decay, crop attacking pests and insects.

Some farmers are reported  to have found officially approved pesticides and herbicides being rather ineffective to control insects and crop infections. Thus they are buying uranium dust in large amounts and using the poison  to store seeds, grain and legumes in their silos.

Prof Mkilaha explained that already TAEC has managed to identify some of the business people who have been selling uranium to farmers in Arusha region and has helped the police to arrest the culprits.

Nuclear expert at TAEC Dr Melkizedeck Mwijarubi has said that once inhaled, uranium dust lodges in lungs and causes serious cases of cancer in both lungs and respiratory tracks and should it be consumed with the crops the chemicals will destroy the digestive system.

According to experts Grain from farmers who coat their produce with uranium dust may affect even those who do not use the chemicals once they grind them in a mill used by others.
