KILIMANJARO MOUNTAIN GLACIER IS HERE TO STAY,EXPERT

Tourists who desire to see Mount Kilimanjaro snows now have a reason to smile, as local ecologists say –“the ice is here to stay”.

Kilimanjaro National Park ecologist, Imani Kikoti told a team of visiting journalists here that the glacier is till sufficient contrary to earlier projection that would vanish between 2015 to 2020.

Prof. Lonnie Thompson from United States of America, in 2002 declared that the snow could disappear within 15 years from that time due to effects of climate change.

“We are comfortable that the ice will not disappear as it was predicted by an American academician” Mr Kikoti said, adding that there are several ongoing studies on the same.

According to him, several initiatives such as massive tree planting around the mountain have somehow mitigated because they boosted the forest cover and consequently reduced the effects of global warming.

He implored residents of Kilimanjaro to continue planting the tree if the snow of the Mount Kilimanjaro, a major tourist’s attraction will remain steady.

Acting KINAPA Park warden, Eva Mallya, said that majority of tourists who climb mount Kilimanjaro every year are normally thrilled by the permanent ice-caped summit, than anything else.

For instance, last financial year, Mount Kilimanjaro attracted over 50,000 tourists across the world, leaving behind around Tsh 80 billion to the economy.

Kilimanjaro's glaciers are disappearing. The ice fields Ernest Hemingway once described as "wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun" have lost 82 percent of their ice since 1912—the year their full extent was first measured.
If current climatic conditions persist, the legendary glaciers, icing the peaks of Africa's highest summit for nearly 12,000 years, could be gone entirely by 2020.

"Just connect the dots," said Ohio State University geologist Lonnie Thompson. "If things remain as they have, in 15 years Kilimanjaro's glaciers will be gone."

When Thompson's reports of glacial recession on Kilimanjaro first emerged in 2002, the story was quickly picked up and trumpeted as another example of humans destroying nature. 

It's easy to see why: Ice fields in the tropics—Kilimanjaro lies about 220 miles (350 kilometers) south of the Equator—are particularly susceptible to climate change, and even the slightest temperature fluctuation can have devastating effects.

"There's a tendency for people to take this temperature increase and draw quick conclusions, which is a mistake," said Douglas R. Hardy, a climatologist at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, who monitored Kilimanjaro's glaciers from mountain top weather stations since 2000.

 "The real explanations are much more complex. Global warming plays a part, but a variety of factors are really involved."

According to Hardy, forest reduction in the areas surrounding Kilimanjaro, and not global warming, might be the strongest human influence on glacial recession.

 "Clearing for agriculture and forest fires—often caused by honey collectors trying to smoke bees out of their hives—have greatly reduced the surrounding forests," he says. The loss of foliage causes less moisture to be pumped into the atmosphere, leading to reduced cloud cover and precipitation and increased solar radiation and glacial evaporation.

Evidence of glacial recession on Kilimanjaro is often dated from 1912, but most scientists believe tropical glaciers began receding as early as the 1850s.

 Stefan L. Hastenrath, a professor of atmospheric studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has found clues in local reports of a dramatic drop in East African lake levels after 1880. Lake evaporation indicates a decrease in precipitation and cloudiness around Kilimanjaro.

"Less cloud coverage lets more sunlight filter through and hit the glaciers," Hastenrath said. "That increase in sunlight then provides more energy for evaporation of the glacier."
Hastenrath found further evidence in sailing expedition reports from the same period.

TATO DONATES 15 MOTORBIKES TO POLICE TO BOOST SECURITY IN ARUSHA REGION

Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) has donated a total of 15 motorcycles to police force in Arusha, in a rare public-private-partnership to fight against crime.

The motorbikes worth Tsh 27 million will help the law enforces to battle with the wave of criminals who are currently riding motorcycles to terrorize people.

TATO chairman, Mr Willy Chambulo said they have decided to help the law enforces to efficient in battling crimes in northern tourism circuit.

“Arusha needs tourism for it to prosper and for that to happen we need to equip our police officers in order be effective to tame crime in this important town” Mr Chambulo said on Thursday during the handing over function.

Receiving the motorbikes, the Arusha regional Police commander, Liberatus Sabas said his force is in dire needy of transport gears like motorcycles in order to face the criminals who have been using motorbikes to sneak after committing crime.

“Criminals have changed their tactics and police also supposed to follow suit, if we are to win the battle. At the moment criminals use motorbikes and police also need the same motorcycle to face them” Mr Sabas noted.

He commended TATO for their support, adding that other stakeholders should also borrow a leaf.

TATO Public Relations Chief, Mr Zuher Fazal said that his association is committed to work together with the government to serve the community.

“Arusha needs to be secure and better place to live if tourists, investors and citizens to enjoy and to achieve this we must support our law enforcers” Mr Fazal noted.

For his part, Arusha Regional commissioner, Magessa Mulongo said at the moment, Arusha is safe compared to eight years ago where criminals turned the area as their hideout.

“We are grateful to TATO for being in fore front to compliment the government efforts. Now criminals should be aware that they can come, but they will never get out safely” Mr Mulongo said.

MOUNDULI RESIDENTS PROTEST AGAINST GOVT MOVE TO MINE SODASH AT ENGARUKA IN ARUSHA

Resident of three villages around  Engaruka area in Monduli District are up in arms against the government plan to mine  sodash  in Their area.

speaking with reporters, they said the move by the government to start the project without their involvement is totally against good governance.

Babulo Alex a resident of Engaruka said if the project will  continue it is going to put their livelihoods in jeopardy because of the negative environmental  impact which is expected to  pose the area if implemented.

In her opinion, Noosikito Rwako said that the project should be terminated immediately and engages fresh dialogue with the villagers to get their views in order to protect their social economic interests.

 “This lake has been a source of water in our land, we feed our cattle’s here ,if they erect a mining plant here ,we are all going to perish “said Rwako.

She went on saying they have been puzzled to see big trucks and machines close to the lake that they depend upon for drinking water and their livestock without the knowledge of what is happening.

A community activists from Selela Village Loserian Ramadhani pointed out that that if the factory is built near the lake the  impact will be enormous and could cause the dam to dry.

Baraka Laizer a representative of Birdlife International said if the plant is  to be built at the same area  it will  pose a  significant environmental  impact to both human and wildlife sharing the ecosystem.

" Bird species of flamingos arrive in the Engaruka  lake  that lies a short distance from Lake Natron to breed ,wild animals will  also suffer greatly if the factory is bound here " said Laizer.

Laizer said most residents are of the opinion that tourism activities are environmental friendly and contribute   more to the livelihood of the villagers.

“ ,This lust of wealth should not lead these people  to suffer in the near future, the government should  consider facts and put its people interests  in  priority  .said Laizer.

He said more than eighteen thousands residents from Selela and Engaruka area are feared to be directly affected if the project will take off.

National development corporation (NDC) corporate affairs Manager Abel Ngapemba recently was quoted by the media saying  that  Tanzania government   is looking for a consultant to carry out socio-technical study for the Engaruka sodash  project which he said is  envisaged to stimulate the economy of Engaruka area

Kwa mujibu wa Mulongo kamati hiyo itatakiwa kuleta mapendekezo  na kuleta mapendekezo ya namna ya  kuboresha hali ya usalama katika machimbo.

Mkuu wa mkoa wa Arusha Magesa  Mulongo ametoa amri hiyo baada ya kufika katika eneo la tukio na kuongea na viongozi wa eneo hilo.

Wakizungumza katika  mkutano wa pamoja uliofanyika  katika eneo la hifadhi  jamii ya wanyama (WMA)  la Enduimet Wilayani Longido, walisema kuwa uwindaji wa tembo na simba katika eneo la mpaka limekuwa ni tatizo kubwa.

Mkuu wa usalama katika eneo la hifadhi jamii la enduimet Imanuel Bujiku alisema kuwa wawindaji wamekuwa wakiwinda wanyama na kukimbilia nchi jirani kukimbia kukamatwa.

Bujiku alisema kuwa  ushirikiano huo umehusisha idara zote za ulinzi usalama  katika nchi zote zikiwemo polisi na vikosi vya kudhibiti ujangili.

Naye mhifadhi jamii kutoka hifadhi ya Amboseli Kenya Francis Irungu alisema kuwa ushirikiano huo utadhoibiti ujangili na kuleta tija kubwa  katka uhifadhi wanyama pori.

“Hii ndio mbinu sahihi na endelevu ya kulinda wanyama katika nyakati kama hizi zenye changamoto kubwa za kihalifu dhiti ya wanyama pori,”alisema Irungu.

Kwa upande wake Samwel Ole Kaangi kutoka mfuko wa uhifadhi wa  Big  life nchini Kenya alisema kuwa ushirikiano huo umewafanya kuweka mpango kazi na utekelezaji kutokomeza ujangili katika eneo hilo.

Mashuhuda wa ajali hiyo walisema kuwa gari dogo ambalo lilikuwa likitokea Arusha likiwabeba wapishi waliokuwa wakitokea jijini Arusha kwenda Longido kwa ajili ya sherehe za kipaimara na harambee  ya kumalizia ujenzi wa kanisa la KKKT.

Harambee hiyo ilikuwa iongozwe na waziri Mkuu mstaafu Edward Lowasa na katibu Mkuu wa CCM Abdulrahman Kinana.

“Abiria sita katika Noa yenye namba T 329AWJ  walipoteza maisha na hakuna majeruhi yeyote katika lori ,tunaendelea na uchunguzi lakini taarifa za awali zinaonyesha kuwa Noa ilikuwa katika mwendo kasi”alisema Kamanda Sabas.  

Aliwataja marehemu waliotambuliwa  kuwa ni Hamidu Msala maarufu kwa jina la Bonge,Habibu waziri ,Faridah Ibrahim ,Martha Gabriel wote wakazi wa Jiji la Arusha wengine wawili bado hawajatambuliwa.

Waandishi wa habari walishuhudia  ndugu jamaa za marehemu wakiwa katika uwanja wa eneo la kuhifadhi maiti katika hospitali ya Mkoa wa Arusha kufuatilia habari za ndugu zao.

Naye muuguzi wa zamu katika hospitali ya Mount Meru ambaye hawakuwa tayari kutaja jina alithibitisha kuwepo kwa majeruhi  wawili ambao alisema hali zao ni mbaya.

FRENCH INVESTOR ARRESTED IN POSSESION OF NARCOTICS

A multi-million-dollars Orkonerei Maasai Social Initiative (OMASI)’sExecutive Director, Mr Michel Bluteau has been arrested by police in Arusha allegedly in possession of bhang.

OMASI is a multi-million-dollars group of companies active in dairy and meat processing, environmentally friendly charcoal and honey production, with its base in Maasai land in northern Tanzania.

Acting Arusha Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Japhet Lusingu said in a statement that a 56-years old French investor was nabbed on Monday morning.

Operating on tip-off, statement shows, police detectives nabbed the suspect who was aboard Toyota Land Cruiser GX with registration number T. 626 AXU, near Sakina police station within the Arusha city.

ACP Lusingu said that his men stopped the vehicle and after searching they found the suspect in possession of bhang.

The police boss further said that Mr Bluteau was arrested with the five rolls of narcotics concealing in his laptop bag.

“Investigation on the matter is still underway and once it is done, the suspect would be arraigned before the court of law to answer the charges facing him” ACP Lusingu concluded in the statement.

Sources said that the investor was released on Monday afternoon after being questioned for hours in Arusha police headquarters.

Government and tour operators forges united front to boost tourism growth

The government has vowed to work closely with the tour operators in a latest effort to boost tourism growth in the country.

Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Ambassador Khamis Kagasheki made a pledge at the weekend during the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) annual gala dinner held in Arusha.

“I commend TATO for taking the tourism industry to the higher level as the country has witnessed a number of tourists clinching to one million mark this year, lets work together to boost the arrivals and revenues” Ambassador Kagasheki told the audience.

He promised the tourism captains the maximum cooperation from his ministry to make their operations more easy than ever before.

The Minister said that Tanzania doesn’t get the visitors it deserves taking into consideration that recently was voted as the second world best tourist destination only after Brazil in terms of natural attractions.

“We all know that the government is not doing business, our biggest role is to create an enabling environment for private sector to operate smoothly, so its up to you tour operators to promote tourism in order to bring more visitors” he stressed.

For his part, TATO chairman, Willy Chambulo demanded the government to recognize the contribution of tourism sector in the country economic growth.

Chambulo said that this year tourism has been the leading sector to bring more foreign currencies, surpassing the traditional gold mineral.

Bank of Tanzania (BoT)’s latest economic review shows that during the period between September 2012 and September 2013, revenues from tourism rose from 1.61 billion USD to 1.82 billion USD, while gold export revenues declined from 2.15 billion USD to 1.74 billion USD.

“We need the government to do the neediful like on security issues and taxation in order for them to promote the sector effectively” Chambulo explained.

TATO’s Public Relations chief, Fazal Zuher said the gala dinner will be an annual event to bring together players in tourism sector and the government officials not only to celebrate, but also to chart the way forward.

“This is new TATO and this gala dinner is one of the raft of events that will be held annually to bring together the key players in tourism and government officials to networking” Fazal concluded

600 FORMER STREET CHILDREN CHANGED THEIR LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS

More than  600  former Street children in Arusha have a reason to smile ,thanks to Watoto foundation a charity organization which  offered them  basic education and  vocational skills.

Most of them are reported to have secured employment in hotels, tourist camps and others in private institutions.

Some of the children are reported to have engaged in entrepreneurship activities   and one is  a second year student in one of in the country. 

Speaking at a ceremony to mark ten years since its inception, the Director of Watoto Foundation Noud Van Hout said that many of the   children were taking drugs and causing havoc in Arusha streets.

The occasion also was saw number boys who have been on vocation training courses graduating.

"We started working and monitoring these children since 2003 when we started, they have changed from street children to good citizens, they are now responsible citizens ” Hout said.

He said that the children were taught farming and other vocational skills which have earned many of them jobs and a basis to begin a new life after the completion of their stay.

“Some years back Wherever you go in the town, lining the pavements and walkways are street children, young boys living on the fringes of society.but  the  foundation  has come up with a unique way to help Tanzania's street children rebuild their lives”

Wilaya ya Ngorongoro kijiji cha Ololosokwan watu 13 wamekamatwa na mifugo yao zaidi ya 2000 inashikiliwa Wilaya ya Serengeti ikiwa ni baada ya wiki mbili .

Wilaya ya Londido kijiji cha Oromba watu  nane wamekamatwa  kwa sababu hizo ,kupigwa na kunyanyaswa .

Katika Wilaya ya Simanjiro watu wawili wamekamatwa na kupigwa ,nyumba zao  kuchomwa na moto  na Wilaya ya Chunya Ng’ombe 169 zimetaifishwa  na mfugaji mmoja aliyetajwa jina la Magaka Ninya aliuwawa katika zoezi hilo .

VILLAGERS RAISES 10MILLION FOR SCHOOL IN ARUMERU

NGABOBO villagers in Arumeru district, Arusha region have raised nearly Tsh 10 million towards the construction of the secondary school in the village.

Officiated by the deputy Minister - Prime Minister's Office, Regional Administration, and Local government, Aggrey Mwanri, the villagers have contributed a number of cattle, goats, sheep, and cash.

Mwanri commended the villagers, mostly Maasai, for their spirit of contributing towards their own development agendas.

He said that the community has chosen the right path of educating their children, calling upon to educate their children irrespective of their gender.

“Girls should be given equal opportunity to study just like boys.” Mr Mwanri said.

He also poured a lot of praise upon Africa Amini Alama organization for mobilizing rural community to contribute towards their development endeavors.

The fundraising was organized by the founder of Africa Amini Alama charity, Dr. Christine Wallner after having realized that the Maasai children need secondary school around. 

Dr. Christine appealed to the affluent people to join the vilagers hands by donating towards the building of the secondary school.

Dr. Cornelia Wallner-Frisee, Africa Amini Alama Vice-president expressed her gratitude to the women who took part in large number in the fundraising event.

SIDO TO BUILT 100M/- PACKAGING FACTORY IN ARUSHA

Small Industries Development Organization in Arusha plans to set up Tsh 100 million packaging materials plant in the near future

Arusha Regional SIDO Manager, Isidore Kiyenze said at the moment he was mobilizing resources for the packaging material factory in order to mitigate the challenge of shortage of the much-needed products.

“We need around Tsh 100 million to be able to buy a modern packaging machine” Mr Kiyenze said during the training of horticultural products processors in northern zone.

Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) complains that limited access to packaging materials in the country and exorbitant taxes charged on imported consumable materials are the challenges facing the small-scale processors.

“The government charges 55 percent taxes in addition to 18 percent VAT for imported consumable materials comprising packaging materials are making the locally processed horticultural products extremely expensive” TAHA Executive Director, Jacqueline Mkindi said.

David Elias, a peanut butter processor in Arusha said that the lack of packaging material is the biggest challenge facing their trade.

“Majority of large buyers are not willing to procurement our products mainly due to poor packaging” Elias told journalists during the training.

He further noted that they couldn’t afford to import packaging materials because they attract high taxes.

Meanwhile; TAHA and SIDO have agreed to conduct a series of training for horticultural processors on new skills of processing their products

The first group of beneficiary of 20 small entrepreneurs in northern zone have completed their course on the new processing technics and products packaging.

“We want to train a pool of trainer of trainers (ToT) in horticultural products processors in order to train others” Mkindi said.

The food and nutrition guru from New Zealand, Dr. Anne Perera said Tanzania’s processors have the potential to capture international markets with their organic horticultural products.

“I have seen the potential, the local processors only need guidance to comply with international regulations to venture into the wider international markets” Dr. Perera said at the end of training she conducted over the weekend in Arusha.

Prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) in lake zone has has been reduced by over 98 percent, thanks to the efforts by a local organization.

Aerial Glaser Pediatric Aids Health Care Initiative (AGPAHI), effective, accessible, and scalable interventions within existing maternal and child health services, are the factors behind the life saving success story.

Children who were born free from HIVAIDS standing with their Parents.

Figures from different care and treatment clinics (CTC) in Shinyanga andGeita regions, indicate that less than two percent of infants were now infected of HIV virus by their mothers.

This means that 98 percent of the newborn babies are now born by HIV and Aids infected mothers, free from the virus.

Dr. Honoratha Rwezaura, CTC coordinator Bukombe District, Geita region, told the visiting journalists that in 2011/12 100 out of 109 new borns were born without HIV virus, meaning that only nine infants were infected.

"This could not be possible without AGAPHI in partnership with the government. They have  been providing various  facilities such as  laboratory equipments, trainings for health workers, among others,  that are factors behind the success story in PMCTC" Dr. Rwezaura told the scribes.

Statitics from Maganzo dispensary in Kishapu district in Shinyanga region, which also under AGPAHI indicate that the a total of 122 infants were born free from the HIV virus, out of 138 babies who were born by HIV positive mothers.

According to Maganzo Medical officer incharge, Sam Phillip the AGPAHI's support of care and treatment has been a life savier for new borns , who  otherwise could have been infected by their mothers.

AGPAHI Executive Director, Laurean Bwanakunu said that prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission  can be accomplished by effective, accessible, and scalable interventions within existing maternal and child health services.

“There’s no execuse for infants to be infected by their mothers at the moment where we have sufficient life prologing drugs for the people living with HIV and AIDS” Mr Bwanakunu explained.

It is understood the transmission of HIV from mothers to their infants contributes substantially to global morbidity and mortality for children under-5 years of age.

Approximately 1000 HIV-infected infants are born every day, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, amounting to nearly 370,000 new pediatric infections annually UNAIDS.

Without treatment, over half of these children will die before the age of two.

AGPAHI is a local organization affiliated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (AGPAF) focusing on pediatric AIDS and health care. The NGO  works with he ministry of Health and Social Welfare and other stakeholders to eliminate Pediatric AIDS.

The Organization supports efforts to increase access to and enrollment  in a comprehensive  package of sustainable , high quality and cost effective  care and treatment  services for HIV infected  families in the areas including Family Planning and PMCTC.
